Whole Curriculum
We have strong links with the primary and high schools in the area. This enables us to build upon the work started by your child in their primary school and to prepare them for the work they will do when they reach high school age.
Children in Year 5 continue to be taught by their class teachers in their year area. Some time in Year 5 will be spent with other teachers who specialise in teaching a particular subject. The amount of time spent with specialist subject teachers increases in Year 6 in preparation for the entirely subject based lessons in years 7 and 8 which in turn prepare pupils for the type of lessons they will have at high school.
Each subject area is in the charge of a subject co-ordinator who, working with other members of staff, devises a curriculum which matches the needs of all children and is within the guide-lines of the National Curriculum. The detail of what is taught and when, is described in each subject's Scheme of Work. The taught subjects which make up the curriculum are: English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Art and Design, Beliefs and Values, Design and Technology, French, Humanities, Music, Personal and Social Education, and Physical Education.
In all subjects, at whatever level a child is working we expect them to try their best and strive for excellence. To enable a child to achieve this we aim to make lessons active, interesting and relevant to them, with work that is challenging but not beyond their capabilities. Lessons will range from class and group based work to individual study which provides children with a "balanced diet" of experiences, giving them the opportunity to develop not just academically but socially as well.
Special Educational Needs
The school has developed a wide range of strategies and individual programmes to help children who have special educational needs. Children may require extra support for learning problems, additional assistance for a physical disability, close attention for a behavioural difficulty, or special help for a variety of long or short term difficulties.
The school is committed to make appropriate provision for any child who has difficulty accessing the curriculum (than the majority of children of the same age).
See Problems section in General Information, which explains how the school supports children with learning difficulties.
The More Able Child - Gifted and Talented
Our more able children are those who demonstrate a significantly higher level of ability than most pupils of the same age, in one or more curriculum subjects.
The school identifies Gifted and Talented children on entry and provides opportunities for extension, achievement and enrichment.
