If a Problem Should Arise...

Learning

Children needing regular help are normally identified in their first school; information about their level of attainment is then passed on at the time of transfer to middle school. A programme is then structured for each child by the Special Needs Co-ordinator. This might involve individual teaching, withdrawal from the classroom in a small group and/or extra support in the classroom. Several teachers are involved in this support. The Local Education Authority provides a special needs advisory service to assist with the identification and remedial procedure. There are also other external agencies who become involved where there is a specific learning difficulty: the Educational Psychologist, the School Medical Service, Social Services. As a parent you would be involved in any issue.

Medical

Minor problems are dealt with at school. If there is a cause for concern you will be contacted and provision made, where necessary, for advice from a medical expert. If you cannot be contacted the medical officer's advice will be acted upon.

It is therefore important to provide the school with a current emergency telephone number.

If a child needs to take medicine at school it should be handed in at the school office. The child will then report to the office at the required times to take it. Parents will be required to complete a Medical disclaimer form for all medicine brought into school.

If your child requires an inhaler it should be clearly marked with their name and kept on their person at all times.

Behaviour

We look to parents to support our high expectation. Exceptional effort is rewarded with a variety of school certificates and letters home. We also seek to offer opportunities for children to develop a responsible attitude towards themselves and others. In a case of serious misbehaviour you will be contacted and invited to the school for a discussion. Within school there are systems of monitoring a child's behaviour, which involve all the teachers concerned. Detention is an option.  When it is considered necessary to detain a child after school for a lengthy period, this is done by making appropriate arrangements with the parents - either by telephone, or by informing the parents in advance, by letter.

Sometimes a child's behaviour reflects some form of disturbance. This would be referred to the Educational Welfare Officer in the first instance; further steps could include your family doctor or Psychological Service. You would be involved in this.

Absence

Please contact the School Office on the first morning of any unexpected absence to tell us the reason for the absence and how long you expect this to be.  Unexplained  absences will be followed up by the School Office.
